Sarigerme Pisilis Ancient City

One must see the remains of the ancient city of Physilis ,located on the coastal flat land in a valley right next to the coastal area where the Sarısu Stream meets the sea .On the banks of the stream are the remains of late Byzantine era city walls and a little further ahead of the road is a Byzantine church with two of its columns still intact .

Name of Physilis is derived from Luwien and Carian language family. Probably it must mean ‘pine passage’ or ‘strait passage’. Strabon, father of the geography, mentioned in his writings that here is an ordinary town between Caunos and Calynda. It is supposed that here has been founded by Lelegs. Ruins are dated till Arcaic and Classic eras. In Roman period settlement came down till sea level. But during Arabian attacks, the people living here were obliged to take shelter in Acropolis.
This city is now buried under the shifting sand. As a result of tourism development carried out before excavation and the construction of hotels in the region the history of Physilis is to remain under the sands of Sarigerme.
